Flashback to 2009

2009 was quite a year for me!  Things were busy for me at work until I got laid off in April.  I took a deep breath and moved on to a fascinating and eventful rest of the year.  I started thinking how long I should break before start looking again, the long list of books I had wanted to read, where I should be traveling, and the list goes on.

The highlights of my 2009 were that I reconnected with my family and traveled to new places and learned a new culture.  The most memorable moments were attending my niece’s high school graduation and moving her to college, and attending my two nephews’ high school graduation in Texas and spending time with them.  I was so preoccupied with work and my life that I felt that they are already grown before I could realize it.  The most fascinating experiences were in China.

I experienced a few shockers in China, especially Beijing and Shanghai, one about the road, the other about police cars.  I also learned more in-depth about the Chinese culture, especially first hand experience of the importance of guanxi, the role of women, and the wine culture, which I will write about in subsequent blogs.

I am grateful for such a wonderful 2009.
